3D printers have been around since the 1980′s (their use back then mainly for industrial prototyping and research) but only in recent years have they been gaining in popularity, applications and availability. How does it work you may be wondering, according to wikipedia it is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file by using an additive process to lay down successive layers of material.

But really the more interesting aspect is what can you make with a 3D printer? Well the options seem limitless.

How about creating a guitar that is beautiful and functional? A little bit of design work and here you are:

Or what about some new furniture?

Some art to go with your new furniture

Or maybe some shoes?

Here I found a resourceful person using a 3D printer to create a lens cap holder a simple solution to a problem.

If you can think of it, you can print it. Of course there are limits, you can’t make food. Or I guess you could but it wouldn’t taste very good. And maybe someday in the future someone might try printing up a person or pet but I don’t think I want to be around when they try that. That’s just a little too out there for me.

What the popularity of the 3D printer has done for me is to realize that there is no end to what we are able to create and do. Only yesterday I heard about Planetary Resources Inc based out of Seattle who plan to use robots to mine water, minerals and other resources out of asteroids as they pass by earth. Something out of the movies? yes, but now also something out of our present.

Mention bubble wrap and people’s first thoughts are probably popping the little plastic bubbles of air, a little smile appears on their face, that stress relief of that little popping noise. Their second thought is probably for its’ intended purpose as a packing material to safe-keep their treasures, but there are many other uses for the air filled plastic than you would have thought.

You can use it to make clothing; dresses are the most common example, everything from haute couture to summer dresses you can find it, but pants and suits have also been created.

Take a look at this adorable little niblet, a cob of corn costume fashioned with bubble wrap.

When it comes to home furnishings, there are numerous ways to use bubble wrap: a bubble wrap chair, wallpaper, or even as a window treatment (it can be a great insulator or if you just moved in and don’t have curtains yet to give a little privacy cover the windows as you unpack). Here is a room screen constructed out of selectively filled bubble wrap sheets.

In arts & crafts there is no end to the ways bubble wrap can be used, use it as a stamp, fill the little bubbles with items for your own art or screen, pour chocolate for fun textured chocolate pieces, build Christmas trees out of it, use it to float flowers in an arrangement.

Everything from dresses, costumes, crafts, stamping, decorations, jewelry and so much more – even to help keep premature babies in the hospital warm.

What’s your most non-traditional use of bubble wrap?

Happy Popping!

Today, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, people and businesses around the world are marking Earth Hour by turning off the lights, shutting down electronics, and reducing their personal power consumption to show their support for climate change action.

The movement started in Australia in 2007, by the WWF-Australia. All they asked was that you turn off your lights for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Their goal was to show that every individual has the power to change the world we live in. Before long, the movement spread around the globe, and in 2011, hundreds of millions of people in 135 countries were taking part in Earth Hour. The global event is scheduled every year on the last Saturday in March.

Although it is easier for an individual to reduce their power consumption by turning off their lights and electronics at home for an hour, businesses have still been urged to join the movement in any way they can. Many major tourist attractions will go dark for the hour long event, while other businesses will reduce their lighting, to security and safety essential lighting only. Businesses can also show their support by shutting down all non-essential equipment that consumes power while sitting idle.

U-Lock Mini Storage will be participating in Earth Hour this year by shut down all non-essential equipment and reducing the amount of light in the facility. All the computers, monitors, and printers will be shut down and unplugged. As well, the lighting inside the offices will be switched off.

U-Lock Mini Storage encourages other businesses and residents in our communities of White Rock, Surrey, Victoria, & Nanaimo, to join the Earth Hour movement, take the pledge, and show your support for climate change action.
